I do in fact appreciate all the feedback: the constructive criticism here led to this much improved version. That said, it's done. The best artist I know did this on short notice to help me out of a jam (volunteered, without being asked) ... and I'm not going back to her again.
Besides, I love this as is.
No idea who's reading the audiobook version. There will probably be one, though.
I like it. Smooth, clean, not quite as busy as the other covers. The right sort of abstract.
But as Jay says.. I'm not going to decide whether to buy the book or not based on the cover. I've already decided. Sell me the book before I begin to resemble a smurf. :)
I should mention now that I'm thinking of it -- I had read Iron Dawn in paperback but had not been able to find the sequel before it was released on fsand. Very much enjoyed both books, so thanks for helping make that happen.
BTW, you needn't buy a kindle. This book will ship on fsand with:
1. Cover JPG 2. HTML copy of book 3. PDF reading copy of book (blank pages omitted) 4. PDF copy formatted for POD (blank pages inserted) 5. EPUB (iPod, iPad, Nook, Android) 6. Mobi (Kindle)
You can buy a kindle, a Nook, an iPad, an iPod, an iPhone, or an Android phone or tablet, and read these books. You can read the HTML or PDF.for.reading on your computer or phone or tablet. You can read the EPUB on any ebook reader except a Kindle; and you can read the Mobi file on that.
Buy a kindle if you want one. But one of the above formats should serve almost anything out there.
I get the ePub model, but any chance of this coming out from a traditional publisher, not just a print on demand? (I'd be completely happy with print o demand though, just sayin'...) I know with Borders going down, that the traditional Brick and Mortar shop might be limited, I still prefer physical books to the iBook on my phone. And besides, I still get giddy thinking about the first time I saw 'The Long Run' on the book rack in the Ralph's supermarket I got it from.
Chance of traditional publisher, low. I didn't spend months writing that epub website on a whim.
I'm not unreasonable; if somebody wanted to pay me some reasonable six figures a year to write books, sure. Otherwise, no. But my take on it is that that's a low percentage possibility.
Possibly there'll be some small press sort of thing at some point doing actual hardcovers or what have you. But after the POD, which I'm selling nicely formatted PDFs to support, this is a lower priority for me.
Totally understand the amount of self control you want to exert after all the shenanigans you had to put up with to get where you are today.
I'll make one final request/plug for a hard cover of this and possibly even a re-release of all the others to match from Subterranean Press. They are a small press focusing on limited edition runs of some great sci-fi writers. They are publishing high quality books with high quality content. A place where you would fit in nicely; Please check them out as one option for a limited edition run where you would retain your rights.
This request comes from a reader who has purchased multiple copies of the original AB, EE, TLR & TLD paperbacks for myself and friends over the years and who also purchased the full hardcover set when published through Quiet Vision. Having another hardcover to go up on the shelf would be great.
Add another vote for a matched set (collector's edition? leatherbound? gold leaf?) of hardcovers for EE, tLR, tLD, AIWar. It would be nice to have a matched set on the shelf in addition to the ebooks. I already have two copies of the tLR in the quietvision editions.
Of course that sort of thing can wait until AIWar has been fully published in ebook format, I'd rather have the books to read first. :)

Illos. and graphic design is much improved!
But please, switch most of the small caps over to mixed case. Right now the cover text is shouting at us; that's not the idea.
Again, too, I feel most of the text is too large.
Who is reading the Audiobook version?

Have I mentioned yet that I'm sold?

Monday -- maybe Sunday evening, but no later than Monday.
Scuba gear, stat!

This is MUCH better! Looking forward to reading some new stuff from you Dan. Just finished re-reading TLR and TLD last week.
I still like the 'brown paper bag'edition but this is definitely a real good cover. Now to just have what is behind it...
Monday??? You swear? Holy shit, I'm off to buy a Kindle.
Dan, just curious, if AI was a paperback book, about how many pages would it run?
Man, I can't wait to read this!
This is my favorite of the proposed covers I've seen here.

I should update my blogger image. I haven't worn that eyepatch except to drive at night in a couple years. I did look good in it, though ...

Dan, final cover design looks great.

And finally...
Thanks for for the great stories.

That's a great, great cover. Looking forward to reading the book inside.
DO WANT.
