Someone has been reading quotations and is feeling philosophical today?

Prayer is when you plead with the universe.
Science is when you try to find out why Prayer failed.

Julian May quotes Pierre Teilhard to say that prayer is not pleading but "storming the gates of heaven". That seems a little more proactive, but my experience agrees with your definition.

Given my planned activities today...

Prayer is when you hope someone doesn't die of blood loss.

Science is when you donate blood to avoid having to pray about it.

Paying it forward is a great concept that both people who pray and those who don't can agree on.

Shawn,

My right eye is severely overpressurized at the moment -- they did a procedure on it Friday afternoon that had me worrying it was going to burst out of my head when they put the needle in.

It sounds like you're dealing with something worse. I'll keep a good thought for you.

Sorry, just saw the followup comment. Sorry to hear about your eye, and glad it's still intact!

I had some transfusions when I was a kid, and also have great friends who wouldn't be here today if someone hadn't figured out safe transfusions. I'm a reasonably rare blood type and donate every time I can - that's what I meant by my comment. I'd finally talked my wife into going down to donate too and felt like it meshed well with the prayer vs. science topic.

Prayer is when you plead with the universe. Science is when you negotiate. Happiness occurs when you make peace with it.
